Fishes Discovery

Question to ponder: Are fishes available for discovery only once? After I've discovered a few fishes and reported them, it seems that I could no longer discover them any more. The differences between the only successful attempt and all failed ones: I've changed to Merchant 52 ship. So far my attempts include Amazon River and Cape Verde.
