My Skill Outline
Although my goal is to become an Art Dealer specializing in tailoring, I also have my eyes set on some skills from the other two classes (mainly the Explorer). So I've list the skills that I think I should have and a few skills that I want just for fun, in no particular order. (The skills that I've acquired will be highlighted in bold.)
01. Accounting (会計)
02. Escape (逃走)
03. Keeping (保管)
04. Fibre Trading (繊維取引)
05. Cloth Trading (織物取引)
06. Dye Trading (染料取引)
07. Tailoring (縫製)
08. Alert (警戒)
09. Application (運用)
10. Body Language (身体言語)
11. Control Sail (操帆) - Need to sail much faster. :D
12. Fishing (釣魚) - Fish is an all-rounder item.
13. Restock (補給) - Pre-requisite for Collecting (調達). Is the skills worth it?
14. Explore (探索) - Pre-requisite for Finding (視認) and Collecting (採集). Should I forget it after I learnt Finding and Collecting?
15. Collecting (調達) - Is this skill worth it?
16. Finding (視認) - This skill will be so much fun. :D
17. Collecting (採集) - Is this skill worth it? Would tailors need any collecting? I'm thinking whether to delete this skill...
18. Control Ship (操舵) - Pre-requisite for Sail Ship (漕船).
19. Repair (修理) - Since I won't be taking any offensive battle skills, better take one that is useful to the fleet.
20. Sail Ship (漕船) - Need to sail much faster. :D
21. Survive (生存) - Is this skill worth it?
22. Handicraft Trading (工芸取引) - For High Quality Clothing (高級衣料). Keep for high level.
23. Art Trading (美術品取引) - Not sure whether this is necessary (though eventually I'll be called as an Art Dealer). Keep for high level.
24. English
25. Norwegian
26. Portugese
27. Spanish
28. Geography (地理学)
29. Navigation (測量)
30. German
31. Dutch
32. French
33. Socializing (社交)
34. Biology (生物學)
35. Biological Analysis (生態調查)
36. History (考古學)
37. Indian Languages (印度諸語)
38. Cannoning (炮術)
39. Advanced Cannoning (彈道學)
40. Cooking (料理)
Any useful skill that I've missed? Any skill that is not worth the trouble?

#20 is "Rowing" and will only work if you are currently sailing in a Galley. I wouldn't get it until much later (possibly after Beta and into retail). #11 is much better.
The following are skills that are grouped by what you want to do:
Fisherman: Fishing + Processing* (保管).
Trader: Accounting, the Trading skills, Sign Language (身体言語)
Crafting: Tailoring
Sailing: Autosails (操帆), Rationing (運用), Repair, Alert (警戒), Escape (so-so).
Exploring: Investigate, Search
I wouldn't reccomend Foraging (採集), Restock, Scavenge (調達), or Survival. They're really not too useful. Foraging is mainly for getting raw commodities from land areas . Scavenge lets you get food & water on long voyages, but if you already have the Ration skill you won't need it. Restock is good for saving money, but I find I'm making so much more money even w/o the Accounting skill it's not necessary. Fishing & Processing also pay for booze & restock costs alone.
I think you should also look at your first trade routes to determine what "trading skills" you need to buy. For instance if you start in London you will probably want "booze trading" first, then possibly ore trading for Plymouth -> Calais.
I believe you start with something like 15 skill slots max, and then increase +1 per level from there on out.
Then I'll get most trading skills for early use and forget the seldom used ones when the time arises. :D
Cartography or Navigation is hardly worth a skill slot. I enjoy using it & it makes things easier, but in reality the minimap & f8 are suitable.
As a soldier in the Japanese OB I got very skilled at being able to open up my map & pinpoint a fairly accurate line to where I was going.
Knowing the coordinates are okay I guess. Geography is always fun when you get a treasure map.
Navigation is the pre-requisite for Geography. Maybe after I get Geography, I'll forget it when I need an extra skill slot.
