Web 2.0: Developing MMORPG

with 2 flag signals and 0 trackbacks.

Kareem Mayan's notes on developing MMORPGs discussed during the Web 2.0 conference:

  • $20-100M to build a game to compete with the big boys
  • Subscribers will stay from 6 months to 8 years
  • There's no finance model for MMPORGs like in film right now, projects funded internally, which is a big hurdle

But if you hit the nail on its head, your rewards would be great. Only the world and language barrier would be your limits.

2 Flag Signals

I went to the Y!PP con at the Argent a year ago when i was living in S.F. You had to dress up in piratey gear. Of course we went off to drink rum, carouse, and dance. :)

Y!PP is an interesting MMORPG exception in that it hasn't needed the capital get started. It's still fairly small, but experiments with numerous payment methods including their doubloon server. The doubloon server, if I have not mentioned it before, means you can play for free, but you must pay $$$ to become an officer, get a boat, buy clothes, etc ... Very interesting.

When I was getting background info for this post, I found out that the doubloon server's model is quite popular in Taiwan, mostly coz the Korean OLGs they localized utilize that model. Some accused that that model has corrupted Taiwan gamers. (shrug)
